February 26, 2025: The East Meets West – Children’s Education Fund (EMW-CEF) is pleased to announce that it has been designated as a registered charity by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), said Naraindra Prashad, Founder of the charity and President of its Board of Directors.
“With charitable status, we have achieved our first major milestone and, now, our plan is to quickly mobilize to support the education of children in impoverished communities,” he said.
EMW-CEF will accomplish its mission to support students in two ways: by providing scholarships, bursaries, and other forms of financial assistance, and by providing books, equipment, and educational aids. Education is our primary focus, said Prashad. “However, we will also provide children with clothing, nutrition health care, and other essentials that make learning in the classroom possible.”
As a CRA registered charity, EMW-CEF will be able issue tax-deductible receipts to its donors. Last April, EMW-CEF hired a legal firm specializing in charity law, B.I.G. Charity Law Group located in Toronto, to prepare its application to the CRA.
EMW-CEF will partner initially with three charities located in Nepal, India and Guyana that provide direct support to students in their communities. In Nepal, the charity is Jyotirgyan Bhavan Paropakari Samaj (JBPS); in Rishikesh, India, the organization is the Khushi Charitable Society and in Guyana, it’s the Oaks of Righteousness.
“Over the past several years, I have established strong relationships with each of these organizations. My family, friends, neighbours, colleagues and, of course, my yoga students have rallied with donations and fundraising events to support their grassroots work with children,” said Prashad, a yoga instructor.
A virtual public launch of EMW-CEF, including the unveiling of its website, is planned for Saturday, April 5, 2025. Guest speakers will include Prashad, members of the charity’s Board of Directors and representatives from two of its charity partners, JBPS and Khushi CS.
